MRgFUS (Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused Ultrasound) is a non-invasive procedure that uses highly focused ultrasound waves guided by MRI to precisely treat specific brain areas responsible for tremors without making surgical incisions.
MRgFUS is commonly used for medication-resistant Essential Tremor and selected patients with tremor-dominant Parkinson’s disease. Suitability depends on an individual’s symptoms, medical history, and imaging findings.
Neither treatment is universally better. MRgFUS is incisionless and requires no implanted device, while DBS is adjustable, reversible, and often preferred for patients with bilateral symptoms or more advanced Parkinson’s disease. A movement disorder specialist can determine the most appropriate treatment.
No. MRgFUS does not cure Parkinson’s disease or Essential Tremor. It helps control tremors and improve quality of life but does not stop disease progression.
Patients with disabling tremors that do not respond adequately to medications may be eligible. Eligibility is determined after neurological assessment, MRI, CT scan, and evaluation of skull density and overall health.
The procedure generally takes 2 to 4 hours, including preparation, MRI guidance, treatment planning, and post-procedure observation.
Temporary numbness, tingling, balance problems, headache, dizziness, or mild gait disturbances may occur after treatment. Most side effects improve over weeks to months, although a small number of patients may experience persistent symptoms.
